Rjukan, Rauland and Vinje — the southern gateway to the plateau
The southern and south-eastern side of Hardangervidda is easily reached from Rjukan, Rauland and Vinje — three towns with a wide range of accommodation close to the national park. Here you will find everything from DNT mountain huts deep on the plateau to hotels, cabin rentals and campsites in the valley below.
DNT cabins
DNT (The Norwegian Trekking Association) operates a network of cabins into the plateau from the south side. All cabins can be booked at ut.no. DNT members receive a discount.
Mogen Tourist Lodge
One of Hardangervidda's oldest tourist lodges, set by the western end of Møsvatn lake in Vinje municipality. Staffed lodge with meals, shower and drying room — a natural starting point for trips into the heart of the plateau.
Kalhovd Tourist Lodge
Beautifully situated by Kalhovdfjord on the south-eastern part of Hardangervidda. The lodge is an important hub on the route between Telemark and Numedal, offering comfortable overnight stays with meals.
Krokan Tourist Cabin
Located close to Rjukanfossen waterfall and the national park entrance from the Rjukan side. Self-service cabin with firewood and cooking facilities. A natural first overnight stop for those starting their hike from Rjukan.
Emergency shelters on the plateau
A network of always-open emergency shelters is spread across Hardangervidda. These are intended for emergencies but may be used by anyone. Always sign the trail log and replenish firewood if you use one.
Hotels
The villages surrounding the park offer a good selection of hotels — from charming family-run mountain hotels to modern resorts with spa and activity programmes.
Austbø Hotel
Family-run mountain hotel in Rauland with 27 rooms (double, triple and four-person rooms), all with private bathroom. Breakfast included. Known for its warm atmosphere and excellent location just outside the national park.
Gaustablikk Fjellresort
Large modern mountain resort at the foot of Gaustatoppen, a short drive from Rjukan. Offers spa, indoor pool and direct access to skiing and hiking. Well suited for families and active holidays.
Skinnarbu National Park Hotel
Uniquely positioned at Møsvatn lake and the national park entrance at Skinnarbu — the same location as the visitor centre. Accommodation with a focus on nature and outdoor recreation, with direct access to the plateau.
Rjukan Hotell
Newly renovated hotel in the centre of Rjukan. A convenient base for day trips to Hardangervidda, Gaustatoppen and the historic industrial heritage sites. Modern facilities and restaurant.
Rjukan Admini Hotel
Boutique hotel in Rjukan with character and history. A unique accommodation option for those who want to experience Rjukan's industrial heritage up close, combined with comfortable lodging and personal service.
Cabin rentals
For those who prefer their own kitchen and the freedom to self-cater — cabin rentals are ideal for families and groups.
Rauland Feriesenter
Open year-round with cabins across six different cabin areas. Well-equipped self-catering units with TV, wood-burning stove and many with sauna and free WiFi. Reception at Rjukanvegen 195, Rauland.
Rjukan Hytte og Caravanpark
Popular cabin park 8 km east of Rjukan along road Rv37 in Miland. 17 cabins for hire at various price levels, plus 17 traditional turf-roofed cabins. Family-friendly with good facilities.
Vierli Hyttegrend
Cabin village in Rauland offering rental cabins in scenic surroundings close to the mountains. Well suited for relaxed holidays or active hiking trips towards the plateau. Simple and family-friendly standard.
Rjukan Cabin Village
Charming cabin village in Rjukan with self-catering cabins inspired by the town's industrial history. Cosy and well-equipped cabins centrally located — a welcoming option for families and groups exploring Rjukan and the surrounding area.
Camping
The right to roam (allemannsretten) gives you the right to camp freely in open nature. There are also organised campsites with facilities for those travelling with a caravan or car and tent.
Rjukan Hytte og Caravanpark — Camping
90 pitches for tents, caravans and motorhomes along Rv37 in Miland, 8 km east of Rjukan. Good sanitary facilities and service building. Popular base for trips to Hardangervidda and Gaustatoppen.
Grøven Camping
Campsite along the E134 in Åmot/Vinje, near Rauland and Haukelifjell on the border of Hardangervidda. Open year-round with service facilities and activities. Family-friendly and centrally located.
Camping on the plateau
The right to roam entitles you to pitch a tent in open country. Choose rocky or grassy surfaces over fragile vegetation, keep at least 150 metres from inhabited buildings, and leave no trace.
Other accommodation around the park
Hardangervidda can be approached from several directions, and good accommodation can be found along all access routes.
Geilo
Major resort on the north side of the plateau with hotels, cabin rentals and campsites. Dr. Holms Hotel is a well-known choice.
Eidfjord
Western gateway via the Hardangerfjord. Quality Hotel Vøringsfoss and Sæbo Camping are among the options here.
Finse
Car-free high-mountain village at 1,222 m above sea level, accessible by the Bergen Railway. Finse 1222 is a staffed DNT hotel in the middle of the plateau.
Uvdal / Nore
The Numedal side of the park, with Uvdal Alpine Centre and local accommodation options along road Rv40.
