Rjukan, Rauland and Vinje — the southern gateway to the plateau

The southern and south-eastern side of Hardangervidda is easily reached from Rjukan, Rauland and Vinje — three towns with a wide range of accommodation close to the national park. Here you will find everything from DNT mountain huts deep on the plateau to hotels, cabin rentals and campsites in the valley below.

DNT cabins

DNT (The Norwegian Trekking Association) operates a network of cabins into the plateau from the south side. All cabins can be booked at ut.no. DNT members receive a discount.

Mogen Tourist Lodge

One of Hardangervidda's oldest tourist lodges, set by the western end of Møsvatn lake in Vinje municipality. Staffed lodge with meals, shower and drying room — a natural starting point for trips into the heart of the plateau.

Kalhovd Tourist Lodge

Beautifully situated by Kalhovdfjord on the south-eastern part of Hardangervidda. The lodge is an important hub on the route between Telemark and Numedal, offering comfortable overnight stays with meals.

Krokan Tourist Cabin

Located close to Rjukanfossen waterfall and the national park entrance from the Rjukan side. Self-service cabin with firewood and cooking facilities. A natural first overnight stop for those starting their hike from Rjukan.

Open emergency

Emergency shelters on the plateau

A network of always-open emergency shelters is spread across Hardangervidda. These are intended for emergencies but may be used by anyone. Always sign the trail log and replenish firewood if you use one.

Wild camping

Camping on the plateau

The right to roam entitles you to pitch a tent in open country. Choose rocky or grassy surfaces over fragile vegetation, keep at least 150 metres from inhabited buildings, and leave no trace.

Geilo

Major resort on the north side of the plateau with hotels, cabin rentals and campsites. Dr. Holms Hotel is a well-known choice.

Eidfjord

Western gateway via the Hardangerfjord. Quality Hotel Vøringsfoss and Sæbo Camping are among the options here.

Finse

Car-free high-mountain village at 1,222 m above sea level, accessible by the Bergen Railway. Finse 1222 is a staffed DNT hotel in the middle of the plateau.
